Last Day of My 2nd Year (Minority Reflection)

Tomorrow will be the official last day of my 2nd year at Wartburg College. You have probably read my story about the retention of minority students. I can say that I am one of the few minority students on campus that have actually been retained. When I first walked on the Wartburg campus, I felt out of place because I was coming to a predominantly white college when I was used to being in a predominantly black high school.

Thoughout my first year at Wartburg I went through many obstacles and was very closed minded about Wartburg, which was the reason why I wanted to leave after the first two week of being there. The support from the Director of Student Diversity Programs, Krystal Madlock helped me realize that I needed to really give this college a try for at least a semester. After the first semester, I realized that this was the college for me because of the many supportive faculty that I came across. I believe that the Communication Arts department and faculty are the best part about Wartburg. I gained so much hands on experience within my first year of college that many in big colleges and university would not get until their third or fourth year of college.

Some Wartburg students have never seen minorities before, but I have learned that I need to be open minded and let them realize that I am not any different from them. I have ran across some ignorant people who are not acceptable of students of color, but I realized that I am going to always run across someone like that and I rather be a Wartburg learning how to deal with it because it will help me in the real world.

I have learned many lesson so far these past two school years and I am ready for more. THE JOURNEY CONTINUES!!!!
